The Mbeya plant plays a key role in maintaining production efficiency, product quality, and operational excellence.


Job Purpose​

The Machine Specialist ensures that production machines operate efficiently, are maintained correctly, and deliver high-quality products at minimal cost. The role involves specialist knowledge transfer, problem solving, and supporting both operations and maintenance teams.


Key Duties & Responsibilities​

1. Operational Support​

  • Provide expert guidance on machine operation, fault finding, and response to failures
  • Coach and mentor shift teams on machine care and performance
  • Participate in regional and plant optimization trials
  • Develop and update work instructions

2. Planned Maintenance​

  • Contribute to maintenance planning meetings
  • Execute scheduled maintenance tasks and reschedule when necessary
  • Assist colleagues during maintenance windows
  • Record maintenance tasks in SAP and participate in post-mortem reviews

3. Routine Maintenance​

  • Perform cleaning, lubrication, inspections, and condition monitoring
  • Resolve issues identified during routine maintenance using problem-solving techniques
  • Communicate unresolved issues to the Maintenance Planner

4. Running Repairs​

  • Conduct or support running repairs on equipment
  • Engage external specialists (OEMs) when needed
  • Verify repairs are effective and document work in SAP

5. Problem Solving​

  • Apply structured problem-solving methodologies
  • Coach team members in resolving technical issues
  • Escalate complex problems to Maintenance Planner or Packaging Engineer

6. Housekeeping & Safety​

  • Operate safely and report unsafe practices
  • Follow work instructions and company procedures
  • Maintain clean work areas and apply 4S principles

7. NPD Implementation & Trials​

  • Support New Product Development (NPD) trials and ensure assets comply
  • Document all asset changes per Engineering Change Management processes

8. Training & Development​

  • Train and assess operators and process artisans in asset care and autonomous maintenance
  • Develop operational and technical standards
  • Promote teamwork, discipline, and timely decision-making

Required Skills & Competencies​

  • Technical Skills: Mechanical and electrical maintenance, troubleshooting, packaging machines
  • IT Skills: Microsoft Office; SAP knowledge essential
  • Soft Skills: Teamwork, coaching, problem-solving, resilient, customer-focused
  • Operational Attributes: Flexible for night/weekend breakdowns, self-starter, results-driven
  • Professional Competencies: Appreciation for quality standards, liaising with OEMs, ability to mentor

Education & Experience​

  • Degree: Mechanical/Electrical Engineering (with instrumentation as an advantage)
  • Experience: Minimum 5 years in engineering; FMCG experience preferred
  • Computer Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office and SAP
  • Specialist Knowledge: Packaging machine functionality and maintenance
