The Department of Basic Education invites applications for the Chief Director: Curriculum Implementation and Monitoring in the Curriculum Policy, Support and Monitoring Branch, based in Pretoria.

This senior management position plays a pivotal role in improving the quality of basic education for learners from 0–4 years in early childhood development through Grade 12, supporting teacher capacity, learner performance, and policy implementation.

Eligibility and Requirements​

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree (NQF Level 7) or equivalent recognized by SAQA.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years at a senior managerial level with high-level planning and management.
  • Knowledge:
    • South African education policy and curriculum frameworks (National Curriculum Framework, CAPS, Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement)
    • Early Childhood Development (0–4 years)
    • Inclusive Education and learner promotion from Grade 1–9
  • Competencies:

Additional Requirements:

  • SMS Pre-entry programme certificate required for all SMS appointments (link to course)
  • Pre-entry assessments including a technical exercise and integrity (ethical conduct) assessment
  • Generic managerial competency assessment for shortlisted candidates
  • Must undergo Personnel Suitability Checks (criminal, citizenship, financial, qualification verification, social media check)
  • Annual performance agreement and financial interest disclosure

Key Duties and Responsibilities​

The Chief Director will provide strategic leadership to the Chief Directorate and oversee the following:

  1. Teacher and Learner Development:
    • Enhance teacher capacity and classroom practices
    • Improve learner participation and success rates in line with the National Development Plan
  2. Policy and Programme Implementation:
    • Collaborate with state institutions, NGOs, and international bodies
    • Develop and implement Norms and Standards under the National Education Policy Act
    • Strengthen School-Based Assessment and data-driven teaching strategies
  3. Curriculum and Assessment Oversight:
    • Implement National Curriculum Framework (NCF) for early childhood
    • Ensure quality implementation of CAPS for Grades R–12
    • Support inclusive education for learners experiencing barriers
  4. Performance and Outcomes:
    • Increase learners mastering minimum competencies in Grades 6 and 9
    • Enhance access to Early Childhood Development and ensure retention up to age 15
    • Implement IIAL and GET Strategy for Grade 12 learners’ university eligibility
